Apparently, quite a lot of Konami slot machines flashed "winning jackpot symbols" for a fifth of a second every so often, purportedly giving gamers "subliminal messages" that may keep them chucking away coins for longer periods of time. Comically, Konami is asserting that the flashing images are merely a "software program glitch" that can be fixed shortly, which leaves us wondering what else might be ailing these machines for the betterment of the establishment. In another tale of misguided advertising and marketing garnering awful PR, Ontario's provincial gambling operator has "pulled 87 video slot machines out of service or physically eliminated them from its casinos" after an investigation found some tricky imagery hidden within. Whereas we've seen fairly a couple of cases where shifty gamblers got the boot, this time it is the slot machines collaborating in a mass exodus of Canadian casinos. Whereas I wouldn't go so far as Carmack to say that the thought of a software patent is in and of itself repugnant, I do suppose their overuse in a video recreation context would doubtless stifle growth and innovation within the business.
